Overview of the Havanese Dog Breed:
Havanese is a cutie little companion and they have admired many of its fan followings in recent years. The silky hair with expressive eyes makes the dog look like a cutie pie. They are attached too much with the owners so they have gained a name called “Velcro.” Surprisingly the dog is so energetic though their shape is too small. They are very good in canine sports and assisting the disabled people.
History of the Havanese Dog Breed:
In the 14th century, when Columbus claimed Cuba for Spain, more Spanish settlers arrived at this Island, where they accompanied a small little breed along with them which comes under the Bichon family of dogs. These dogs were later gets developed and Havanese is formed. Later in the 18th century, the breed spreads across Spain, France and Britain. Havanese dog breed got registered in the American kennel club in 1995.
Personality of the Havanese Dog Breed:
The Havanese is an affectionate and loyal dog where they follow you to all the spaces in your home. They are very intelligent and makes fun of you. They love human companionship. Havanese dog loves being on the laps of his best person. The only worrisome thing in him is that if he is left alone, he may become stubborn and uninterested in any activities.
Feeding (Diet and Nutrition):
Havanese dogs require proper nutritional contents to enrich their longevity. Make the diet plan, including 22% of crude proteins, 8% of fat and a small number of fiber contents. The Havanese dog’s metabolism is fast enough to reach growth. So, it is recommended to feed them with 1/2 to 1 cup of food per meals divided into two.
The Havanese is a small breed but they require a lengthy walk or any sports activities to keep them fit and healthy. Also, they will feel bored if they are restricted to a small area. So, take them out daily to make them feel relaxed. Take them to the behavioral classes right from the age of the pup so that Havanese dog breed could easily grasp the commands.
Common Health Problems:
Havanese is just like the similar dogs out there. It too gets several diseases that could put their health status in vein. But please make sure that they have passed the health clearance test to ensure that they are free from the inheritance of the disease. Also, there are some diseases which may form even they are free from inheritance. They are as below:

- Heart murmur
Coat Color and Grooming:
The Havanese dog breed has a thick and short coat which doesn’t shed easily. So the grooming is very easy on these dogs. Their hair may be textured straight, curly or wavy. They are available in white, black, sable, gray and tan. Brush them regularly to keep the silky smooth coat in a good condition.
Size and Weight:
The Havanese is a very small dog and they stand around 8 1/2 inches to 11 1/2 inches taller at the shoulder level. While looking at their weight they weigh around 7 to 13 pounds.
