To be precise, no. Cats shouldn’t eat marshmallows, while marshmallows in and of themselves are not harmful to cats; they are also not healthy for them to eat.

Marshmallows are confectionaries; this means that they contain extremely high amounts of sugar and potential weight gaining properties.

If your cat is already a diabetic or is obese, it would be especially not a good idea to feed your cat even a single bite of a marshmallow.

Another important thing to know is that a cat is always an obligate omnivore, in simple terms, this means that your cat won’t derive any sort of helpful nutrition from non-animal-based products.

Even if you feed them a wholesome amount of green vegetables, they will still acquire barely any helpful health benefit from them.

Thus something like a marshmallow is truly not recommended to be fed to your cat.

Marshmallows are inherently unhealthy products due to how much artificial preservatives they contain along with the sugar content that is rather unhealthy even for a human.

Sugar-free marshmallows are even more harmful to feed to your cat due to the “xylitol” compound included in them, which is considered to be extremely harmful to any animal.

Not only that, but normal marshmallows can help your cat gain outrageous amounts of weight if they feed on it regularly. As said before, since cats are carnivores, it is impossible for them to gain any sort of helpful nutrients from a plant or any non-animal-based product.

There are near to no nutritional benefits to marshmallows besides the sweet taste, which wouldn’t be helpful for your cat even in that regard as cats predominantly do not have receptors for tasting sweets.  

If your cat somehow eats a large number of marshmallows, they will experience several side effects such as vomiting, tremors, and diarrhea. These symptoms could become worse if the cat is left untreated.

Can Cats Eat Marshmallows – What if My Cat is Intent on Eating One?

If your cat truly does want to eat marshmallows, you could give one to them. But only a single piece, don’t think of marshmallows as even treats to give to your cat regularly. Just to satiate their curiosity you could give them a single and tiny piece of a standard roasted marshmallow.

Also, do remember that the rather malleable structure of a marshmallow could act as a choking hazard for your cat. Make sure to not feed them a big piece for that very reason.

If your cat experiences any form of discomfort after eating a small amount of marshmallow, immediately check up with your veterinarian as your cat might be experiencing such a problem from directly eating the marshmallow.

Otherwise, it is recommended to not feed your cat any marshmallows and keep their diet to be strictly meat-based products to help them gain protein.

Can cats eat marshmallows?  No, if you were intending to feed your cat lots of marshmallows, then reconsider that.  Ideally, try not to feed your cat any marshmallow at all.
